Healthy Holiday Habits

We all can probably admit that the holidays are typically the time when we allow ourselves a few extra indulgences. And if you are like me, come January 1st you are regretting it. I decided this year that it was time to take control of my holiday habits and try to make some decisions that wouldn’t leave me with another addition to my New Year’s resolutions.

Here are some easy ways we all can keep ourselves in check this holiday season:

1. Cocktails: Instead of dipping the ladle into the bowl of punch or yummy eggnog (45o calories!), try to choose a low calorie cocktail. For a little sweetness in your holiday cocktail, try a Stoli Vanilla and Diet Coke which is around 80 calories. Another option is choosing a low calorie beer. Miller Lite, Bud Lite and Michelob Ultra are all 100-120 calories. Wine and champagne are also typically 100-140 calories per glass. For a warm drink, try a Bailey’s and coffee (no whip cream), only 100 calories! If you are in the mood for a festive punch or cocktail, try making this Sparkling Pear and Cranberry Cocktail which is only 95 calories!

2. Cookies and Sweet Treats: We all know the sage advice of eating in moderation, but what fun is that? Try some of these sensible recipes. You can indulge and still not have to spend hours at the gym!

If you like chocolate and coffee try the Boot Track Cookies (I think kids would love these!) and they are only 63 calories each!

Are you into cookies with a little spice? Try these Yummy Molasses Cracklesthat go for a mere 79 calories!

And for the ultimate indulgence, try these Brownie Bites which are made with whole wheat flour and weight in at just 70 calories.

3. Appetizers: The drinks are going down smoothly, the conversation is flowing, and we are mindlessly eating every appetizer in the room. When you are filled with a room of deliciously tempting foods this year try considering this advice:

Look for appetizers where vegetables take the dominant role such as these Phyllo Wrapped Asparagus. Only 59 calories!

Look for appetizers that feature a filling and healthy protein like shrimp! If you want to make your own try this recipe for Poached Shrimp with Bay Leaves and Lemon. It’s only 93 calories for 3 oz. of shrimp. Enjoy!

4. Exercise: I know that it’s hard to find time to fit in this necessary component in our lives during the busy holiday season, but here is an idea to get you inspired. Try getting some friends together for a Sweat and Sweets party! Go to a local yoga class, get together for a run, or try a type of exercise no one has every done before like belly dancing!
